Election Results 2016: Promise of a Better Life for the Filipino

Out of 54.6 million registered voters for 2016 Presidential elections, a historic high of 81.62% went to the polls, according to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) reports.

The voters’ enthusiasm to join in the elections is in itself a marvel to behold. In a young voting population, there is a great clamor for change that should be sufficient for Filipinos to enable them to live and work decently in their own land. That, according to the election results, could be possible under the leadership of the most unconventional and controversial Presidential candidate - Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte.

The unofficial and partial results released by the COMELEC and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) as of 13 May 2016 still show Davao City Mayor Duterte as the presumptive 16th President of the Republic.

Garnering a runaway win and leading by more than 6 million votes over his nearest opponent, the future President brings a promise of ending corruption in the government, stopping pervasive criminality and acts of terrorism, and bringing rebel groups to the peace talks table in the conflict-ridden areas. This, he believes, could lift the peace and order situation in the country to a new high, consequently allowing for  local and national development efforts to prosper.

To most of us, this line of thought resonates clearly. We are done with illegal drugs flooding and corrupting our people, done with human trafficking bringing our women and children to the gutter of helplessness and despair, done with thousands of families being forced to leave their homes due to unresolved armed conflicts, done with the brightest and most skilled leaving the country for better lives, done with the traffic of EDSA!

The unconventional stance is likely to change in due time, as the Mayor logically remarks that the President “should be prim and proper”. Ready to make amends for his controversial statements, the future leader is said to have planned the necessary diplomatic apologies. Whoever wins as his partner Vice-President, Filipinos have started to express belief that the future President, with the assistance of a proper VP, will thoughtfully adapt to the "GMRC" of a national leader.

For the Vice-Presidential race, Senator Bongbong Marcos shouts election irregularity as his more than a million lead against Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo was overtaken overnight coinciding with a glitch the nature and resolution of which were not immediately divulged to the public. Nonetheless, the total number of overseas absentee votes plus those from areas where special elections are to be held is said to become a game changer for close fights such as this.

For more than 100 million Filipinos, especially the poor, underprivileged and disadvantaged, a new President and a government that will uphold human dignity and uplift them from the dire and oppressive conditions of daily life is indeed most welcome, a miraculous sight deserving of a joyful celebration! Lest we forget, everyone has to make significant counterparts in order to complete the scenario for a better life for the Filipino.
